On September 17, Ola from our team received a message from the class teacher:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cEverything is fine with the children. They cooperated very well.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fortunately, the threat had passed.<\/p>\n

But when you are a parent waiting for a message like this, much more goes through your mind than just: \u201cIs everything okay?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

More questions quickly follow:<\/p>\n

Would my child know what to do?<\/strong>
Would they know where to stay?<\/strong>
Would they try to call me?<\/strong>
Would I know what to say to them?<\/strong>
And how should I talk about it afterwards so I do not leave them feeling afraid?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And that is exactly where the conversation within our team began.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

At Kappa Data, we usually talk about security in very technical terms.<\/p>\n

Networks. Cyber threats. Business continuity. Access to infrastructure. Procedures. Emergency situations.<\/p>\n

But that day, some of us looked at security from a completely different perspective.<\/p>\n

As parents waiting for confirmation that their children were safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So we started talking.<\/p>\n

What should a child actually know?<\/p>\n

What should a parent agree with them in advance?<\/p>\n

In an emergency, should they call or send a text message?<\/p>\n

What should happen if someone else comes to pick up the child?<\/p>\n

Could a family password also help if someone impersonates a relative over the phone?<\/p>\n

And most importantly:<\/p>\n

How can we talk to a child about all of this so they feel safer afterwards, not more afraid?<\/h3>\n

See How Much You Already Know<\/h3>\n

We reached one conclusion quite quickly.<\/p>\n

We do not want to start this kind of conversation with:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat would you do if something bad happened?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

A much better place to start is:<\/p>\n

\u201cSee how much you already know.\u201d<\/h3>\n

Because children really do know a lot.<\/p>\n

They know who their teacher is. They know who they trust. They can follow instructions. They know where their school and home are. Older children can send a short message. Younger children know that in a difficult situation, they should stay with a trusted adult.<\/p>\n

What they need most is someone to calmly help them organize that knowledge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That is how the idea for the Family ABC Student Safety Plan<\/strong> was born.<\/p>\n

The plan does not replace school procedures. Its purpose is to help parents have a calm conversation at home and agree a few simple rules with their child in advance.<\/p>\n

Then the Whole Team and the Municipality Got Involved<\/h2>\n

Ola and Iwona<\/strong> looked at the plan as parents: can you sit down with it at the kitchen table and have a normal conversation with your child? Is the language reassuring rather than frightening? Will a child understand what is expected of them?<\/p>\n

Marcin Ko\u015bciesza and Kazimierz<\/strong> looked at it from a safety perspective: what should happen first, what should be avoided in a chaotic situation, and how can we reduce actions that may increase risk?<\/p>\n

Marcin Piekarz and Mateusz<\/strong> focused on the practical side: the route to school, an alternative route, a safe place, and being picked up by someone else. Can these rules really work in everyday life, not just sound good on paper?<\/p>\n

Ilona and Gosia<\/strong> took a clear-headed look at how much information a person can actually remember under stress and how to reduce the whole plan to a few simple messages.<\/p>\n

And then we started asking each other questions:<\/p>\n

Is this really needed?<\/strong>
Are we making it too complicated?<\/strong>
Will a parent know how to use it?<\/strong>
And most importantly: what will a child actually remember from this conversation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

But It All Started with One Reaction<\/h3>\n

Joanna said that her family had already had a simple plan in place for a long time, in case they were unable to contact each other or something unexpected happened.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

One Message Instead of Ten Phone Calls<\/h2>\n

The plan includes a few very simple rules.<\/p>\n

The child stays with the teacher. They do not try to look for a parent or sibling on their own. If it is safe to use a phone, one short message is enough instead of making repeated calls:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m safe. I\u2019m at school. I\u2019m waiting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The parent, in turn, knows that not receiving an immediate call does not necessarily mean that something is wrong. In a crisis, the mobile network may be overloaded, the child may not have access to their phone, or the school may be moving students to a safe location.<\/p>\n

These may seem like small things.<\/p>\n

But sometimes it is exactly these small things that give both the child and the parent something clear to hold on to in a difficult moment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A Family Password That Also Works Online<\/h2>\n

The plan also includes a family password<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Not only for situations when someone else is supposed to pick up the child.<\/p>\n

It can also help when someone calls pretending to be a family member, sends a message from a \u201cnew number\u201d, contacts the child through a messaging app, or asks for money, personal data or a code.<\/p>\n

The rule is simple:<\/p>\n

We do not say the password first. The person who wants to confirm their identity should already know it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And this is where our two worlds, physical safety and cybersecurity, suddenly came together very naturally.<\/p>\n

In the End, We Created a Fridge Card<\/h2>\n

We did not want to stop at a few pages of text.<\/p>\n

So we also created \u201cMy Safety Card\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Five simple rules for a child:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. I stay with my teacher.<\/li>\n
  2. I follow instructions.<\/li>\n
  3. I do not go looking for my family on my own.<\/li>\n
  4. If I can, I send one short message.<\/li>\n
  5. I only leave when it has been confirmed that I can.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    And one more:<\/p>\n

    When I feel scared, I look for an adult I trust.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Because a child does not need to know the entire procedure.<\/p>\n

    They need to know their next safe step<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Kappa Data Is About Technology. But Safety Starts with People.<\/h2>\n

    We work with cybersecurity, networks and technology.<\/p>\n

    But our team is made up of more than just specialists.<\/p>\n

    We are also mums and dads.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    On September 17, some of us were simply waiting for a message telling us that everything was okay.<\/p>\n

    And perhaps that is exactly why this project looks the way it does.<\/p>\n

    We do not want to create another instruction manual that a parent downloads, saves somewhere and never opens again.<\/p>\n

    We want to give them a few meaningful minutes of conversation with their child<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    A conversation after which the child does not think:<\/p>\n

    \u201cI need to be afraid.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

    But instead:<\/p>\n

    \u201cI know what to do. I can handle this. The adults have a plan.\u201d<\/h3>\n

    We do not want to frighten children.<\/strong>
    We want to prepare them.<\/strong>
    And help them believe that they already know and can do a lot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
